Mott MacDonald has unique worldwide experience of developing
major urban water supplies and treating efficiently a wide range of
waters, including the desalination of seawater and brackish water
sources.

We also bring international expertise in dams, water intake
configuration, long distance conveyance in pipelines, tunnels or
canals and treatment processes appropriate to local conditions.
Mott MacDonald in India has been charged with delivering this
expertise to the Fourth Mumbai Water Supply Project (Middle
Vaitarana), one of the most significant projects under-ways in
India at present. Our business is also concerned with strengthening
and extending water distribution to increase the proportion of the
population with access to clean piped water, both in rural and
urban areas. This more than any other factor is crucial to
improving public health and improving livelihoods, especially for
women.
When given a choice, we have shown that urban communities will
chose to deal with wastewater collection ahead of other
infrastructure improvements. Mott MacDonald has very significant
experience of planning, designing and supervising the installation
of underground drainage (and sewers and sewerage), and building
sewage treatment and disposal works. There is considerable overlap
here with our long-standing experience of effluent treatment for
industries, including Combined (i.e. shared) Effluent Treatment
Plant (CETP).
Our pioneering work in India on stakeholder participation has been
applied to both urban and rural water projects, often specifically
targeted at improving services to the poor. The importance of
multiple uses, particularly productive ones like vegetable gardens,
fish ponds and keeping livestock finds resonance with Mott
MacDonald's expertise in related fields in agricultural water
management and the social development sector.
