Irrigation and drainage

Over 70% of India's population is dependent on agriculture, and India has the largest irrigated area in the world (57 Mha), but only a relatively small proportion (2.5 Mha) of the arable area is drained. We have been involved in several drainage studies, for the Narmada Mahi Doab, Indira Gandhi Nahar Pariyojana (IGNP) in Rajasthan and Sodic Lands in Uttar Pradesh.

Irrigation, or more holistically agricultural water management, is of major importance in sustaining food security and providing raw materials for the food processing and textile sectors. The country has made tremendous progress in achieving food security and reducing poverty through the development of irrigation, but many projects remain uncompleted.
