Over 70% of India's population is dependent on agriculture, and
India has the largest irrigated area in the world (57 Mha), but
only a relatively small proportion (2.5 Mha) of the arable area is
drained. We have been involved in several drainage studies, for the
Narmada Mahi Doab, Indira Gandhi Nahar Pariyojana (IGNP) in
Rajasthan and Sodic Lands in Uttar Pradesh.
Modern drip irrigation of vineyeard on the Deccan
plateau, near NasikIrrigation, or more holistically
agricultural water management, is of major importance in sustaining
food security and providing raw materials for the food processing
and textile sectors. The country has made tremendous progress in
achieving food security and reducing poverty through the
development of irrigation, but many projects remain uncompleted.
