India is hugely dependent on the monsoon as well as an ability
to store and manage water through the rest of the year, and between
years. In much of India, water is the engine for development,
sustaining rural livelihoods and providing the raw materials and
markets for the manufacturing sector.
We undertook a regional environment assessment under
the World Bank funded India Eco-Development project of the Pench
Tiger Reserve to increase the participation of local people in
conserving bio-diversity. Pench is in Madhya Pradesh, home to 30%
of the country’s tigers. As one of the leading names in the
water sector, Mott MacDonald is highly responsive to the
opportunities for indepen-dent consultants to participate in the
sector, particularly in:
- Sustainable water resources management
- Agricultural water management
- Water supply and treatment
- Water distribution and demand management
- Wastewater collection, treatment and safe disposal
- Stormwater drainage and flood protection
- Multiple use and reuse of water
- Integrated projects combining one or more of the above with
other development, such as urban roads and housing.
Mott MacDonald's particular strength in India is in integrated
urban development projects, in which we pioneered a participatory
approach where representatives of all stakeholders chose their
development priorities. In most cases, this was water, and within
water, wastewater collection.
