and Environment (SHE) Award 2009 in its category in the service
sector.
The SHE Award celebrates exemplary commitment for environmental
responsibility, and the health and safety of employees and society
as a whole.
Winning the CII SHE Award acknowledges the fact that safety, health
and environment are top priorities for Mott MacDonald and a key
part of our corporate culture.
The award ceremony took place at The Taj Mahal Palace and Tower in
Mumbai. Harshad Shah, Rajesh N Shah and Pankaj Vora were present to
receive the award.
The SHE Award builds on last year’s Gold Award from the Royal
Society for the Prevention of Accidents and the Construction News

area of safety, health and environment is clearly attracting
attention and acclaim.
BCIA 2010
Our team collecting the award We celebrated a
hat trick of successes at this prestigious event recognising
excellence in the UK construction sector.
Delhi International Airport won the coveted International Award. We
provided project-winning concept designs and produced a 30-year
airport master plan and preliminary designs. We enabled delivery
from scratch in just 50 months. The airport has the capacity to
deal with 34 million passengers per annum and features Asia’s
longest runway.
Cathodic protection (CP) of Runcorn's Silver Jubilee Bridge won the
Local Authority Award, identifying it as a project consistent with
the government’s Better Public Building programme. We developed an
innovative CP solution that has extended this key transport link's
life from an estimated 5-10 years to 25 and beyond.
The East London Line won the Regeneration Award, highlighting the
significant contribution it has made to London Boroughs through the
creation of new transport facilities. We developed the preliminary
design, has been serving as technical advisor and provided
independent certification of works for London Overground.

Association for Project Management (APM) Awards
Paul Hilton and Gemma Holmes with APM president
Martin Barnes (left) and the event's host, BBC presenter Bill
Turnbull (right) Mott MacDonald has been named Project
Management Company of the Year.
With 17,500 individual and 500 corporate members throughout the UK
and abroad, the APM is the largest independent professional body of
its kind in Europe.
The APM has been combining its members’ extensive experience in
developing the science and art of project management for over 35
years. It has also established a widely recognised professional
development and qualification programme.
Their awards are the most prestigious in the UK project management
sector. So for Mott MacDonald receiving the Project Management
Company of the Year title is a huge coup.
This award recognises commitment to project management
professionalism and the organisation that stands out as an exemplar
in the development of project management professionals. The
rigorous entry process saw the judges looking for an outstanding
ability to rise to challenges, tenacity in the face of obstacles
and flair in documenting work as project manager.
SAISC Steel Awards
Mbombela Stadium Mbombela Stadium won the
Tubular Structures trophy at the awards event organised by the
Southern African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC).
The judges described the stadium as “one of those endeavours that
gave South Africa the opportunity to show what it can do when it
comes to the construction of enormous and complex projects.” The
very complex and intricate connections consisting of 11 pipes
intersecting in a node were highlighted.
Mott MacDonald was structural designer for the lightweight, cable
stayed roof of the stadium – one of seven built for the 2010 World
Cup. The roof is the visually dominant element of the stadium – its
structural masts are evocative of giraffes – and our design sets
international standards for weight and cost efficiency.
Commenting on the masts and Zebra stripe seats, the judges said
they “enhance the stadium’s status as the new and lasting grand
entrance to the Lowveld and its game reserve treasures. The end
result is an aesthetically pleasing, well executed and efficient
structure, which is an inspiration to the local population and the
country as a whole to always keep striving for greater
heights.”
ICE Thames Valley branch Engineering Excellence Awards
The M4 Prince of Wales Bridge The M4 Prince
of Wales Bridge has won both the Engineering Achievement Award and
the Overall Engineering Excellence Award. The awards showcased the
best civil engineering projects in the region.
The Prince of Wales Bridge was built in the early 1960s and in the
1970s the bypass was upgraded to a motorway and widened. But the
bridge was not widened resulting in discontinuous hard shoulders
which, combined with high traffic volumes, presented major
maintenance difficulties for the Highways Agency (HA).
The bridge upgrade scheme presented the challenge of maintaining
traffic flows of 140,000 vehicles per day while widening the
existing structure. We designed the widening works and introduced
innovations that saved time, prevented road closures, enhanced
safety and delivered a safe structure for the HA with long-term
maintenance in mind.
South African Institution of Civil Engineering (Durban)
Durban Harbour The widening of the entrance
to Durban Harbour wins the Most Outstanding Civil Engineering
Project Award.
Durban Harbour is South Africa's busiest container port and
harbour.
Increasing cargo and vessel capacities have required the upgrade of
several areas of the port including the entrance. The entrance
channel was too narrow and shallow for the modern generation of
container vessels so excavation and dredging has been used to widen
it by 100m and deepen it to 16m.
The project also included construction of a new breakwater, repair
and strengthening of an existing breakwater, as well as the
enhancement of navigation aids. Mott MacDonald provided planning
and development, site investigation, design, construction
supervision and project management services.
BCA Construction Excellence Awards
Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway Kallang-Paya
Lebar Expressway (KPE) Contract 423 wins the Civil Engineering
Award.
The BCA praised the innovation displayed on the project along with
its outstanding safety record.
Mott MacDonald provided design services to Samsung Corporation for
Contract 423, a 3km fully underground section of the KPE. We
employed our leading edge, innovative geotechnical skills on the
project to overcome the numerous challenges that were encountered,
including the presence of deep soft soils and sensitive adjacent
structures. These challenges had led to the expressway being
labelled one of the most difficult projects in the world by the
client, Singapore’s Land Transport Authority.
This award perfectly complements the Civil Engineering Award KPE
won at the 2009 BCA Design and Engineering Safety Excellence Awards
for delivering outstanding safety.
Public Private Finance (PPF) Awards 2010
Our PFI/PPP advisory team Our PFI/PPP
advisory team once again claimed the prestigious Best Technical

consecutive year, that Mott MacDonald has won this prestigious
accolade.
A panel of some of the most respected and experienced professionals
from the public and private sectors judged the awards. They
highlighted the 20 UK projects worth around £9 billion that we
brought to financial close over the last year. They also praised
our global reach, which last year extended to 75 overseas
assignments in 33 countries.
The award reflects our outstanding contribution to the forward
progress of public private partnerships and confirms our commanding
position in this sector as recently highlighted by ‘Infrastructure
Journal’, who named Mott MacDonald the world’s leading PFI
technical adviser. At the same event, Newcastle City Library won
the Best Community/User Involvement in a Project Award. The library
was part of the £40 million Newcastle Libraries PFI Project, the
largest library PFI undertaken in the UK.
